Honoring the Historic Significance of Michie, Tennessee
What is Michie, TN?
Michie, Tennessee is a small incorporated town in the southeastern area of McNairy County.
Cofounded in 1847 as "Monterey" by Benjamin Sanders to honor the Battle of Monterey (1846) in the Mexican-American War, Monterey operated as a small settlement for many years until the height of the Civil War when it became the contested divide between Shiloh and Corinth, Mississippi. By 1881, Monterey re-applied for its post office, but the name was already taken. The community decided on "Michie" after a prominent local family.
Michie officially incorporated in 1961 and now operates a local municipal government.

About Us
The Old Monterey Trail Committee is a dedicated non-profit organization committed to the conservation and preservation of the historic Old Monterey in Michie, Tennessee. Through public outreach, community events, and advocacy efforts, we aim to promote awareness, action and appreciation for this vital part of our heritage. Our goal is to connect the past with the present and ensure that future generations can experience the rich Civil War history that lies within southeastern McNairy County.
Our mission is to "discover, document and preserve historical locations in Michie, Tennessee to educate the public and youth."
