The Old Monterey Trail Committee is dedicated to the conservation and preservation of historic Michie, once the village of Monterey. Through community engagement, public outreach efforts, and preservation initiatives, we strive to honor and maintain the rich history of our region for future generations.
Shiloh & Monterey
April, 1862
From the beginning of the month of April, Monterey played a large role in the Confederate ambush at Shiloh. The small village hosted thousands of encamped Confederate soldiers during the several days of camping and held the vital crossroads of Hamburg, Corinth and Purdy Road. The area is the site of the Battle of Fallen Timbers on April 8, 1862, when Confederate Colonel Nathan B. Forrest led a charge of cavalry against William T. Sherman's pursuit, giving way to the end of one of the most fatal and fierce battles in the entire Civil War. Following Shiloh, Monterey held one of the largest field hospitals in the area until the end of the Siege of Corinth.
The Siege of Corinth
April 29 - May 30, 1862
At once, when Union Major General Henry W. Halleck ordered an advance to Corinth, Mississippi on April 29, thousands of Confederates encamped at Monterey encountered thousands within the Union advance guard. Following intense skirmishing for days, Monterey was captured and provided the Union with the crucial Pea Ridge Overlook to Farmington and Corinth. Miles of entrenchments were made by the Union army towards Corinth. The area was the headquarters for Gen. Halleck and Gen. Grant until the capture of Corinth on May 30, 1862.
